Management Plan

Management Plan for the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Wismar Altstadt

Every UNESCO World Heritage site is obligated to conceive a management plan for the preservation and protection of the site's “outstanding universal value” for submission to UNESCO. This is officially documented in the guidelines if the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Chapter 1, Article II.F, Stipulation 108.

The Hanseatic Town of Wismar submitted its original management plan for the future world heritage site as part of its application for entry in the World Heritage List. This document – ratified by the town's legislative assembly, the Bürgerschaft, in December 2000 – has formed the guidelines for conduct within the World Heritage site since then.

Monitoring has taken place annually since Wismar's addition to the World Heritage List for Humanity in 2002.

1. Management Plan Update

Between April 2012 and January 2013 a committee in the Hanseatic Town of Wismar was assigned the task of preparing the first update of the management plan for the UNESCO World Heritage site Altstadt Wismar. Parallel to this work was a second update to the ISEK-Teilkonzeptes Altstadt ('Integrated Town Development Concept: Subsection Wismar Old Town').

After a process of citizen participation involving online presentations and several town citizen's meetings, both the document summarizing the resulting proposals and the first update of the management plan for the UNESCO World Heritage site Altstadt Wismar was ratified by a session of the town's legislative assembly (Bürgerschaft) on September 26th 2013.
