Rising high, proud and mighty, visible from far and wide from land and sea are Wismar’s imposing churches of St. Nikolai, St. Georges and St. Mary’s. At St. Mary’s the visitor can experience the building techniques of Brick Gothic and the skills of the craftsmen of the middle ages. The highlight of the exhibition is a 3D film showing the virtual construction process of the church. St Georges is one of the largest brick-built churches in the North and East of Germany. Severely damaged by bombing raids in WW2 it remained at the mercy of the elements until 1990, when, on the 25th of January hurricane strength winds caused the southern gable to collapse inwards. This event proved to be the catalyst for the reconstruction process. Allow yourself to be beguiled by the charm of Red Brick Gothic.
