UNESCO World Heritage Wismar

UNESCO World Heritage

Whether it is the Egyptian pyramids, the Grand Canyon in the USA or India's Taj Mahal – there is one thing these unique natural and cultural monuments have in common with the Hanseatic Town of Wismar: they are significant cultural or artistic treasures, certified as being of "outstanding universal value", and as such worthy of preservation for future generations. Today, over 980 sites belong to the UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity

2002- Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List

In 2002 Wismar, alongside Stralsund, was added to the world heritage list. During the middle ages, both towns proved to be important trading centres for the Hanse, and since then have been able to maintain their medieval structure to an exceptional degree. The historic city centres of Wismar and Stralsund represent the ideal and typical development of a hanseatic town in the 14th century.

Wismar in particular was able to maintain the typical medieval style in its harbour, the symbol of a medieval maritime trading town. Moreover, the Grube, which flows to the habour, is the last remaining man-made medieval canal in any North German town centre. Inside the town walls, the three monumental churches are a unique example of the famous red-brick gothic building style of the southern Baltic region and St. Marien in particular is an important landmark from land and sea, even today. Of course, many buildings and monuments remind us of the days of the Swedish occupation; most of which, due to their World Heritage listing, remain unchanged and capable of telling us their story.
